UAE to deploy 8 exaflop supercomputers in India to strengthen sovereign AI infrastructure

MUMBAI: Abu Dhabi has announced plans to establish a national-scale artificial intelligence supercomputer in India with a peak computing capacity of 8 exaflops, marking a significant step forward in India’s sovereign AI infrastructure ambitions.

The initiative represents India’s transition into exaflop-scale AI computing, substantially expanding domestic high-performance computing capacity to support advanced artificial intelligence development, research and deployment.

According to details released, the supercomputing system will operate under governance frameworks defined by India, with all data retained within national jurisdiction. The design aligns with sovereign security, compliance and data localisation requirements, reinforcing India’s push to build trusted and self-reliant digital infrastructure.

The project is expected to serve as a foundational pillar under the India AI Mission, providing large-scale compute power for training advanced AI models, supporting research institutions, startups, and public-sector applications.

By enabling access to high-capacity domestic computing resources, the initiative aims to reduce reliance on overseas cloud infrastructure and strengthen India’s ability to develop and deploy cutting-edge AI systems independently.

The move also signals deeper strategic technology collaboration between the UAE and India, as countries increasingly prioritise sovereign AI capabilities amid intensifying global competition for advanced compute resources.
