Saudi Arabia Designates 2026 as the “Year of Artificial Intelligence”

Saudi Arabia has officially declared 2026 as the Year of Artificial Intelligence, a strategic move aimed at solidifying the Kingdom’s position as a global leader in advanced technology. The decision, approved by the Saudi Council of Ministers under the leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, marks a major milestone in the country’s Vision 2030 roadmap.

Leading the charge is the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), which has transitioned the national AI agenda from strategic planning to large-scale implementation. The Kingdom currently ranks 14th globally in the 2025 Global AI Index and is the top-ranked Arab nation for AI model development. This momentum is backed by a staggering $9.1 billion in funding secured by AI companies operating within the Kingdom and a 56% increase in government spending on emerging technologies in the last year alone.

National Branding: Heritage Meets Innovation

SDAIA has unveiled a unified visual identity for the year, designed to bridge Saudi Arabia’s cultural roots with its digital future:

  • The Symbol: A palm tree (national emblem) merged with the letters “AI.”
  • The Colors: Green (representing the national flag and identity) and Blue (symbolizing digital technology and advanced innovation).
  • The Typography: Inspired by electronic circuit patterns, linking traditional Arabic script with the digital landscape.
  • Official Hashtag: #SaudiAIYear

2026 Roadmap: Key Infrastructure and Events

The Year of AI will serve as a platform for several high-profile initiatives and infrastructure projects:

  • Global AI Summit (September 15–17, 2026): Riyadh will host the fourth edition of this flagship event, bringing together world leaders and tech CEOs to discuss the future of the industry.
  • Smart Data & AI Summit (August 26–27, 2026): A specialized gathering of over 300 senior stakeholders focusing on generative AI and smart urban development.
  • World-Class Infrastructure: The year highlights the operational success of the Shaheen III supercomputer and the Hexagon Data Center—the world’s largest government data facility at 480 megawatts.
  • Ethical Leadership: Saudi Arabia continues to host ICAIRE (the International Center for AI Research and Ethics), a UNESCO-backed center in Riyadh focused on responsible AI governance.
