Vodacom South Africa has successfully demonstrated “SuperUpload,” a 5G-Advanced technology that achieved uplink speeds of 254 Mbps—the first of its kind on the African continent. By allowing a 5G device to transmit data across two different channels simultaneously and automatically selecting the most efficient path, the technology effectively doubles the current median mobile speeds found in leading markets like Morocco.
This breakthrough shifts the focus of 5G from purely download-centric performance to high-capacity uploading, rivaling high-end fiber-to-the-home connections. Technology Director Beverly Ngwenya highlighted that this “fundamental shift” enables seamless mobile support for data-heavy tasks such as large file transfers, high-definition video conferencing, and real-time AI tools, reducing the reliance on fixed broadband for mission-critical collaboration.
