Iraq introduces 20% service fee on fiber and Wi-Fi internet

Iraq’s Ministry of Communications has introduced an additional 20 percent service fee on internet services delivered through fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks and Wi-Fi providers, according to an official document issued in Baghdad.

The decision is based on a cabinet resolution approved in December 2025 and is part of the government’s broader effort to increase state revenues.

The move comes as Iraq continues expanding its fiber-optic network to modernize national digital infrastructure. Government data show that fiber-optic subscriptions grew sharply in 2024, rising by about 413.9 percent from 216,800 users to around 1.1 million subscribers as FTTH services were rolled out across several provinces.

Despite this growth, mobile internet remains the dominant connectivity option in Iraq, with more than 21 million subscribers nationwide. Many regions, particularly in the southern parts of the country, still have limited fiber-optic coverage.

The new fee will apply to internet services delivered through fiber networks and Wi-Fi providers used by households and businesses.
