Oman is advancing its space ambitions with the launch of a new space technology hub in the Al Hajar Al Gharbi Starlight Reserve in Dakhliyah governorate. The initiative includes the development of an advanced astronomical observatory and satellite ground stations, marking a significant milestone in the country’s emerging space ecosystem.
The project is being implemented through a cooperation programme between the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, the Environment Authority, and Astronomical Solutions Company. It operates under a space-sector sandbox framework, offering a flexible and secure regulatory environment to test and develop new space technologies.
Set within a designated starlight reserve known for its exceptionally clear skies and minimal light pollution, the location is well suited for astronomical observation, satellite tracking, and space research. The initiative combines scientific exploration with infrastructure development, enabling both research and commercial applications.
The Environment Authority will oversee environmental compliance and land allocation, ensuring the protection of the reserve’s natural characteristics. The ministry will manage the technical and communications framework, while Astronomical Solutions Company will design, build, and operate the facilities in line with international standards, alongside attracting investment and research collaborations.
Beyond research, the project is expected to support knowledge transfer, strengthen national capabilities, and open new investment opportunities. It also introduces a new dimension of sustainable astronomical tourism, leveraging Oman’s natural landscape for scientific and experiential value.
Aligned with Oman’s Space Sector Policy and Executive Programme (2023–2033), the initiative reflects the country’s broader push to integrate advanced technologies with economic diversification. It also supports the National Digital Economy Programme by creating an enabling environment for innovation, startups, and entrepreneurship in space and related sectors.
