Sri Lanka has hosted its first-ever iGaming conference, signaling a strategic push to develop both its online gaming and land-based casino sectors as part of a broader economic and tourism strategy.
The Global Game Connect (GGC) trade show, held in Colombo, brought together international iGaming operators, suppliers, and compliance experts, with strong participation from Asian and Chinese technology players. The event highlighted Sri Lanka’s ambition to position itself as a regional hub for gaming and digital innovation.
Government officials emphasized the country’s potential to serve nearby high-growth markets such as India. Deputy Tourism Minister Ruwan Ranasinghe noted that Sri Lanka aims to become a platform for expanding gaming enterprises while attracting foreign investment and technological expertise.
Alongside iGaming, the land-based casino sector is also gaining momentum. The recently launched City of Dreams Sri Lanka—developed by Melco Resorts & Entertainment and John Keells Holdings—marks the country’s first integrated resort and a major milestone in its tourism infrastructure.
Plans for further expansion are underway, with the government inviting bids for the unfinished Grand Hyatt tower in Colombo, which is being considered as a potential site for a second integrated resort.
The government sees gaming as a key pillar in driving high-end tourism, creating jobs, and supporting economic recovery following recent financial challenges. Officials aim to attract premium international visitors and position Sri Lanka as a destination for luxury and experiential tourism.
While the country recorded 2.3 million tourist arrivals in 2025, it fell short of its 3 million target. Authorities now aim to reach 5 million annual visitors by 2030, leveraging sectors such as gaming, meetings, and conventions.
However, recent geopolitical tensions have impacted tourism flows, with arrivals declining and hundreds of flights cancelled. Despite this, Sri Lanka continues to pursue long-term growth through diversified tourism and digital entertainment strategies.
