Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA) has announced a revamped SIM registration system aimed at strengthening security, improving accountability, and enhancing user experience across the telecom sector.
The new framework will introduce advanced verification measures, including linking phone numbers to verified identities and integrating with the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) to detect and block stolen or illegal devices. This marks a shift from SIM-based registration to identity-based validation.
Authorities emphasized that the process will be free for consumers, with telecom operators covering associated costs. The rollout will follow completion of legal and technical frameworks, alongside extensive stakeholder engagement to ensure smooth implementation.
Designed to address gaps in previous exercises—such as inconsistent identity data and biometric issues—the initiative is expected to improve trust, reduce fraud, and modernize Ghana’s digital ecosystem.
