Egypt extends customs exemption on mobile phones brought by expatriates starting April

Cairo, March 25, 2026 — Egypt has extended the customs exemption period for mobile phones brought into the country by expatriates from 90 days to 120 days, effective April 1.

The decision, announced by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Communications, aims to ease processes for Egyptians living abroad while enhancing access to digital and consular services.

The move follows earlier policy changes this year, when Egypt ended broad customs exemptions on imported mobile phones as of January 21. Under the revised framework, only devices brought by expatriates and tourists remained eligible for temporary exemption—previously capped at 90 days.

Officials noted that the extension supports broader efforts to strengthen digital transformation and improve services for citizens overseas, while maintaining regulatory control over device imports.

The policy adjustment reflects a more targeted approach—balancing facilitation for expatriates with tighter oversight on mobile device entry into the country.
