Oman is marking the International Day of Education on January 24, highlighting the theme ‘Artificial Intelligence and Education: Challenges and Opportunities.’ The country has made significant strides in integrating AI into education, including launching AI-focused initiatives and training programs for educators.
Dr. Mahmoud bin Abdullah al Abri, Secretary of the Omani National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science, discussed AI’s growing role in enhancing teaching, evaluation, and curriculum development. Oman’s commitment to AI in education is evident in initiatives like AI scientific chairs at Sultan Qaboos University and the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, as well as the launch of the ‘Artificial Intelligence Makers’ initiative to foster local talent.
The Ministry of Education is advancing AI integration through the Digitalisation of Curricula project, which is converting textbooks into interactive digital formats for grades 1–4. The project includes educational films, virtual reality, and simulations. Furthermore, over 3,268 educators have benefited from extensive AI training through workshops.
In addition to AI adoption, Oman is enhancing its school infrastructure by upgrading over 50,000 computers and improving internet speeds. AI-enabled classrooms and research collaborations with Sultan Qaboos University are also in progress, solidifying Oman’s position in the 2024 Government AI Readiness Index at 45th place.
Oman continues to drive its digital transformation in education, preparing both students and educators for the future.
