Egypt is intensifying efforts to reach its goal of attracting 30 million tourists annually by 2028 with key reforms designed to enhance its tourism infrastructure. A major component of this initiative is the introduction of a new emergency electronic visa (e-Visa) system, set to streamline the arrival process for international travelers at Egyptian airports, making Egypt a more accessible and attractive destination.
The announcement came during a government meeting on May 5, 2025, which assessed the country’s ongoing tourism reforms. These changes are in line with Egypt’s Sustainable Tourism Strategy 2030, which aims to position Egypt as a premier global destination. The new e-Visa system is part of the broader push to simplify entry procedures, reducing bureaucratic barriers and ensuring a seamless experience for tourists.
Emergency e-Visa: A Seamless On-Arrival Option
The emergency e-Visa is one of the most significant aspects of Egypt’s new tourism strategy. This system allows travelers to obtain their visa upon arrival at Egyptian airports, using automated kiosks, an online platform, or a mobile app. The process is designed to be quick and user-friendly, enabling tourists to complete their visa application within minutes, bypassing the need for extensive paperwork.
This new system is especially beneficial for travelers who may not have been able to secure a visa in advance or those with last-minute travel plans. The emergency e-Visa system will initially launch as a pilot project at Cairo International Airport and will later be expanded to seven other international airports, with full rollout planned across all 14 international airports in Egypt.
Since the introduction of the e-Visa service in December 2017, Egypt has made it easier for nationals from 78 countries to obtain their travel authorization online, significantly reducing barriers for international travelers.
Extension of the 96-Hour Free Transit Visa Program
In addition to the e-Visa system, the Egyptian government has extended its 96-hour free transit visa program, initially launched in 2023. This program allows travelers transiting through Egypt on EgyptAir, Air Cairo, or Nile Air to leave the airport and explore Egypt for up to four days, without the need for a visa.
The extension of the 96-hour free transit visa until April 2026 is expected to further boost tourism, offering travelers a chance to explore Egypt’s rich culture and historical landmarks during their layovers. This initiative also aims to increase local tourism spending, showcasing Egypt’s diverse attractions, from the Red Sea beaches to the Pyramids of Giza.
Aiming for 30 Million Visitors by 2028
Egypt welcomed 15.7 million visitors in 2024, setting a new record for the country. With the introduction of these new reforms and the ongoing development of the country’s tourism infrastructure, Egypt is on track to achieve even greater success. The goal of reaching 30 million annual visitors by 2028 is ambitious, but with modernized entry procedures and expanded tourism offerings, this target is well within reach.
