US-based Web3 game developer Spekter Games announced the successful closure of a $5 million pre-seed funding round. Leading investors include a16z through its Speedrun program, LVP, BRV Capital, and Accelerator Ventures.
Founded by Taehoon Kim, who exited his previous startup nWay following its acquisition by Animoca Brands in 2024, Spekter Games aims to blend deep gameplay mechanics and compelling metagame features with Web3 incentives to boost player retention and engagement on mobile and social platforms.
The company’s debut title, the roguelite game Spekter Agency, is currently in testing on Telegram, with a second, unnamed game already in development. Spekter plans to launch its games both on chat-based super apps like Telegram and through traditional app stores.
Robin Guo of a16z remarked, “We believe there is a real opportunity to improve early tap-to-earn games on Telegram with rich mechanics that appeal to genuine gamers. We’re excited to support TK and his team as they redefine gaming on chat platforms.”
Taehoon Kim added, “Our goal is to create games players enjoy for their gameplay, not just rewards. Web3 incentives can enhance retention and virality if they remain passive and unobtrusive, allowing us to bring Web3-enhanced games to mainstream audiences without compromising fun.”
