The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has reported significant progress in its nationwide Smart Meters Project, with over 988,000 smart electricity and water meters installed across the country as of mid-2025, according to updates shared on Kahramaa’s official social media channels and reported by Zawya.
The installations include more than 528,000 smart electricity meters and 460,000 smart water meters. The comprehensive project consists of over 12 sub-projects, aiming to replace all traditional electricity and water meters with advanced digital alternatives. The full deployment of smart electricity meters is scheduled for completion by the end of 2025, while smart water meters are expected to be fully installed by the end of 2027.
These smart meters provide a wide range of features, such as real-time consumption monitoring, prepaid payment options, fault detection, and simplified billing and property transfer processes. Consumers can access their consumption data conveniently through a dedicated mobile application.
Connected to a centralized digital platform, the smart meters enable remote monitoring, automated billing, and wireless data transmission, significantly reducing the need for manual meter reading and improving data accuracy.
Kahramaa highlights that the system supports detailed analysis of consumption patterns, demand forecasting, and the integration of renewable energy sources. It also facilitates faster meter provisioning, consumption alerts, system diagnostics, and efficient data exchange between consumers and operational centers.
The platform’s capability to detect and address anomalies helps minimize resource wastage and leakage, aligning with the environmental and infrastructural goals set forth in Qatar National Vision 2030.
Automating billing and monitoring processes is expected to allow Kahramaa to reallocate human resources toward more technical and strategic roles while reducing operational errors. Over the long term, the project is anticipated to deliver cost savings, enhance network reliability, and enable more accurate demand planning to support Qatar’s growing population and urban development.
Kahramaa described the Smart Meters Project as “a landmark achievement in the region’s digital transformation journey,” underscoring Qatar’s commitment to integrating smart technologies into public services. The corporation continues to emphasize the importance of public engagement, noting that “active participation and awareness are key to maximizing the benefits of the smart meters.”
