Pakistan is making significant strides in telecommunications management through two key developments. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) recently announced a partnership with Opensignal, a global network analytics firm, to enhance monitoring and improve the quality of service (QoS) and quality of experience (QoE) for telecom subscribers nationwide. Using crowdsourced real-time data, Opensignal will provide PTA with objective insights on network performance metrics including 4G/5G speeds, latency, coverage gaps, and user experience. This data-driven approach will support evidence-based decisions to boost network reliability, promote investment, and align services with International Telecommunication Union (ITU) standards.
In contrast, the introduction of satellite-based internet services faces delays as Pakistan finalizes stricter regulations for foreign satellite operators. The Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board (PSARB) is drafting new Satellite Communications Regulations after consultations with industry stakeholders, aiming to invite more players while incorporating enhanced security provisions in response to recent regional conflicts. Foreign operators, such as Starlink whose temporary permit expired in March, must reapply under these rules and obtain operational licenses from the PTA. Despite these regulatory hurdles, satellite internet services are expected to launch by the end of 2025.
