Huawei, a leading global technology company, and Walton, a prominent Bangladeshi multinational brand, have entered into a strategic agreement to manufacture lithium batteries in Bangladesh. This initiative is set to enhance the telecommunications infrastructure by providing eco-friendly power solutions for Base Transceiver Stations (BTS).
The contract signing took place on Thursday, with key figures such as Pan Junfeng, President of Huawei South Asia Region and CEO of Huawei Bangladesh, and S M Rezaul Alam, Chairman of Walton Digi-Tech Industries Ltd., leading the ceremony. The event was also attended by the Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh, Yao Wen, Managing Director S M Monjurul Alam Ovee, and approximately 30 carrier representatives.
This collaboration marks a significant step towards greening the telecom industry in Bangladesh. Walton will set up a state-of-the-art, fully automated production line with an annual capacity of 80,000 units to manufacture high-quality, intelligent lithium batteries, a shift from the prevalent low-quality options in the market. Huawei will contribute with technical support, design, raw materials, and manufacturing guidance.
Lithium-ion batteries are known for their nearly 100% efficiency, durability, and minimal maintenance needs, making them an ideal choice for environmental sustainability. This move is expected to drastically cut costs, boost operational efficiency, and reduce carbon emissions in line with global reduction targets.
Huawei’s lithium batteries are already serving over 340 operators across 170 countries, accounting for a third of the global telecom energy market. In the Asia-Pacific region alone, Huawei holds a 35% market share.
This partnership not only aims to revolutionize the BTS power backup systems in Bangladesh but also aligns with the country’s increasing shift towards renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. The joint venture is anticipated to stimulate local investment, promote employment, boost exports, and benefit the people of Bangladesh through enhanced energy solutions.
