Avantel has secured a INR4.6 billion (approximately US$49 million) contract to supply satellite-based real-time train information system (RTIS) devices for Indian Railways, marking a significant step toward smarter rail operations.
The order, awarded by Zetwerk Manufacturing Businesses, includes the supply and maintenance of around 12,000 RTIS devices, along with a one-year warranty and a five-year annual maintenance contract. The project will be executed over three years.
Developed in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the RTIS system uses satellite technology to automatically track train locations, speeds, and arrival and departure times, enabling real-time visibility across the network.
The deployment will support the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), enhancing operational efficiency, scheduling accuracy, and overall network performance for Indian Railways.
The initiative aligns with India’s broader push toward digital infrastructure modernization and self-reliance, strengthening indigenous capabilities in satellite communications and transport technology.
