Oman’s TRA Hosts Telecommunications Dialogue to Advance Sector Improvements

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) convened a comprehensive dialogue session at Muscat’s Movenpick Hotel, engaging various stakeholders to discuss advancements and challenges in Oman’s telecommunications sector.

The session showcased TRA’s initiatives aimed at enhancing telecommunications services, including the phase-out of 3G in favor of more advanced 4G and 5G technologies. This shift is designed to provide users with faster internet speeds and improved service quality. Discussions also explored the transition of internet users to fiber optic and 5G networks, which promise higher speeds and better connectivity.

Key issues such as spam, cyber fraud, and the safety of children online were also on the agenda. The TRA has taken active steps to combat cyber fraud through collaboration with service providers and the formation of a joint working group dedicated to monitoring and mitigating fraudulent activities. Public awareness campaigns are also being implemented to educate users about cyber risks and preventive measures.

Special attention was given to protecting children from screen addiction, with initiatives to promote safe technology use among the youth. The TRA emphasized that 86% of children in Oman use the internet, underscoring the importance of these educational campaigns.

Eng Nasser al Jabri, Director of the Service Quality and Universal Service Department, reported on the TRA’s efforts to resolve complaints and improve service quality. He noted that the authority had upgraded numerous stations to modern technologies and transitioned thousands of subscribers to improved network services.

Participants from various telecommunications firms also contributed ideas on enhancing cybersecurity measures and ensuring data privacy.

The dialogue session aimed to foster better communication with stakeholders and gather feedback on services, ultimately driving forward the development of Oman’s telecommunications sector to better meet user expectations and enhance service quality.
