Telecom Egypt has entered into a cooperation agreement with Mobily, a leading Saudi Technology, Media, and Telecom (TMT) firm, to establish the first submarine cable linking Saudi Arabia and Egypt, according to a recent press release.
Wholly owned by Mobily, the new cable will traverse the Red Sea, connecting the two countries while facilitating further expansion to Europe through various connectivity options. This initiative enhances Mobily’s network of subsea cable systems and international infrastructure, aimed at providing more reliable connectivity, managing increasing telecom traffic, and meeting the growing demand for internet services both locally and internationally.
The cable will terminate at two cable landing stations located in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, and Duba, Saudi Arabia, allowing Mobily to connect the Arabian Gulf and neighboring countries to the Egyptian landing station via its digital corridors. Additionally, it will link to several subsea cable systems that land in Egypt.
“The signing of the agreement underscores our commitment to expanding our infrastructure and enhancing our capabilities both regionally and internationally, as Mobily’s new cable will connect Saudi Arabia to Egypt and improve communication flexibility between the Middle East and Europe,” commented Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al-Badran, CEO of Mobily.
“This agreement marks a significant milestone in our collaboration with Mobily, advancing our joint ambitious plans and connecting major regional hubs such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia,” noted Mohamed Nasr, Managing Director and CEO of Telecom Egypt.
