Bangladesh’s telecom ministry ordered removal of the internet shutdown clause from the telecom law and called for reforming surveillance systems to align with international standards, enhancing digital rights and legal oversight.
Bangladesh has invited Elon Musk’s Starlink to launch satellite internet services in the country, aiming to prevent future government-led internet shutdowns. The move is expected to protect BPO firms, call centers, and freelancers from disruptions caused by political instability, ensuring uninterrupted internet access for key sectors.
Bangladesh’s interim government is taking legal measures to prevent future internet shutdowns, including recognizing internet access as a citizen’s right, amending the Telecommunications Act, and canceling SOPs for shutdowns. Additionally, a draft of the Personal Data Protection Act will be made available by May for public consultation.
