Vodacom’s revenue rose 10.9% to R81.6B in H1 2025, driven by strong data and fintech growth across South Africa, Egypt, and Safaricom. The Group expanded 5G, grew financial services users to 93.7M, and advanced Vision 2030 targets through R9.4B in digital infrastructure investment.
Meta and Safaricom are partnering on a $2.9 billion undersea cable linking Oman and Kenya, known as the Daraja Project. The 4,108 km system will expand 4G, 5G, and broadband capacity, strengthen Kenya’s role as a regional tech hub, and enhance internet access and digital services across East Africa.
The $23 million Kenya–Oman subsea cable by Safaricom and Meta will provide East Africa with cheaper, more reliable internet and greater resilience. For Safaricom, it marks independence from leased systems, while Meta strengthens its role in Africa’s connectivity through major subsea, data, and fiber investments.
Kenya is considering splitting Safaricom into three standalone entities — mobile, towers, and M-Pesa. Officials believe the move would enhance efficiency, reduce competition risks, and increase state revenue. The Central Bank supports direct oversight of M-Pesa, though Safaricom has resisted calls for separation.
