Jordan Engineers Association and Huawei Launch 10Gbps Initiative for Digital Advancement

JEA, Huawei MoU

The Jordan Engineers Association (JEA), in collaboration with Huawei Jordan, has officially launched the 10Gbps Initiative, a significant step towards accelerating digital transformation in Jordan. This initiative was unveiled at the Jordan 10Gbps Society Summit 2023 in Amman, where stakeholders engaged in a workshop to discuss the advancement of fiber optic networks and broadband internet in the region.

During the summit, JEA and Huawei Jordan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop superfast broadband infrastructure capable of delivering 10Gbps connections. This agreement aligns with Jordan’s national goals for digital transformation and seeks to enhance the global competitiveness of its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure.

Key points of the MoU include exchanging expertise through workshops and seminars and establishing communication channels and collaborative workgroups. Tawfiq Momani, representing the Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship Ahmad Hanandeh, highlighted ongoing efforts to expand Jordan’s fiber optic network across all governorates.

Zaid Al Qadi, deputizing for the chairman of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC), noted Jordan’s notable position in internet speed, ranking fourth regionally and 37th globally. He expressed optimism that the workshop’s outcomes would further improve Jordan’s standing in the sector.

JEA Vice President Fawzi Musaad emphasized the crucial role of digital technology in sustainable development, social inclusion, and economic empowerment. He stressed the need for modern infrastructure development, particularly in fiber optic networks, to keep pace with technological advancements.

Addressing unemployment challenges heightened by technological progress, the JEA has established the Engineers Academy for Training & Development. This initiative focuses on equipping young engineers with essential skills to meet labor market demands.

Ali Khawaldeh, Head of the Electrical Engineering Division at JEA, presented several recommendations for digital infrastructure investment. These recommendations underscore the importance of collaboration with public and private institutions to foster innovation, support digital literacy, and implement reforms conducive to digital infrastructure development. He also highlighted the need for enhancing cyber security, data privacy, environmental sustainability, and promoting green practices in digital transformation.

The Jordan 10Gbps Society Summit 2023 marks a significant step in Jordan’s journey towards a digitally advanced society, with a focus on creating a robust and secure digital infrastructure that fosters innovation, security, and sustainability.
