Digital Rights Nepal (DRN) has released two significant analysis papers that delve into critical aspects of cyber security in Nepal, according to Advocate Santosh Sigdel, the executive director of DRN. The publications aim to shed light on how the country’s cyber security measures could affect citizens’ digital rights and freedoms.
The first paper, titled ‘Rastriya Cyber Suraksha Nitisambandhi Bishleshan Patra,’ offers a comprehensive review of Nepal’s National Cyber Security Policy 2080. It explores the policy’s implications for human rights, emphasizing concerns over potential increases in online content repression, censorship, and self-censorship. Additionally, the paper discusses the risks associated with heightened surveillance and data collection practices that lack robust security protocols.
The second paper, ‘Rastriya Internet Gateway Sambandhi Bishleshan Patra,’ examines the proposed National Internet Gateway. This analysis highlights the gateway’s potential to restrict internet freedom by enabling governmental control over digital content and limiting global information access. The paper also warns of the risks of internet fragmentation and increased surveillance, which could compromise user privacy and security in Nepal.
These publications by DRN underscore the need for careful consideration of cyber security policies to ensure they protect rather than infringe upon the digital rights and freedoms of Nepal’s citizens.
