Omantel, the leading telecommunications provider in Oman, has inaugurated the second-largest data center in the region, situated in Salalah. This development aligns with the company’s strategic initiative to bolster the Sultanate’s digital infrastructure amid escalating data service demands.
The unveiling occurred during the Oman Information Technology Forum at the Millennium Resort Salalah, attended by His Highness Marwan bin Turki al Said, Governor of Dhofar. Talal bin Said al Maamari, CEO of Omantel, showcased the company’s contributions to the digital sector in Oman, particularly in the Dhofar Governorate, and outlined the innovative services and solutions offered.
The new data center is poised to enhance connectivity significantly, linking with over ten new submarine cables to Asia and Europe, and integrating three relay centers for robust network support in Salalah and southern Oman. The facility will also accommodate data centers for global giants such as Equinix, Facebook, and Google, cementing Salalah’s position as a pivotal hub for digital infrastructure in the region.
A panel discussion titled “Challenges Related to the Adoption of Digital Technologies in the Sultanate of Oman” featured insights from Dr. Amer bin Awad al Rawas, Chairman of the Oman Energy Association (OPAL); Lujaina al Kharusiya, Vice President of Governance and Regulatory Affairs at Omantel; and Laila al Hadhramiya, Executive Director of the Omani Information Technology Association. The discourse focused on the necessity of advancing telecommunications infrastructure, enhancing internet quality, and fostering technical awareness among the youth to keep pace with rapid technological evolutions.
Additionally, a technical exhibition complemented the forum, introducing attendees to cutting-edge solutions like national cloud services, cybersecurity, Digital Twin technologies, and digital surveillance systems.
