Nokia has signed a strategic three-year agreement with Zain Iraq to enhance the telecom operator’s network in the southern region of Iraq, as the demand for data services continues to grow. This partnership marks Nokia’s entry into the microwave (MW) business with Zain Iraq, focusing on boosting network capacity and performance.
Deployment of Nokia’s state-of-the-art microwave technology, including advanced E-band solutions, will begin immediately. The upgrade aims to expand network capacity, improve customer experience, and ensure the scalability needed for future growth. Zain Iraq has seen a sharp rise in data traffic, making this network expansion critical to maintaining service quality.
As part of the agreement, Nokia will replace existing competitor equipment with its high-capacity microwave solutions, anchored by the UBT-T XP version. Known for offering the highest transmit power on the market, this technology will reduce antenna sizes and tower load, leading to significant savings in both capital expenditure (Capex) and operational expenditure (Opex).
Mikko Lavanti, Senior Vice President of Mobile Networks at Nokia MEA, commented, “This partnership highlights our local expertise and capabilities. With our advanced microwave solutions, Zain Iraq will gain an optimized network ready to meet the demands of its expanding customer base.”
Zain Iraq’s CEO, Emre Gurkan, emphasized the importance of the collaboration, noting, “Nokia’s technology enables us to overcome existing capacity challenges while future-proofing our infrastructure to support long-term growth.”
This partnership is set to strengthen Zain Iraq’s network, positioning it to handle the anticipated surge in data demand while enhancing overall service quality for its customers.
