On the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York, the Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO) and the League of Arab States (LAS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at fostering an inclusive and sustainable digital economy. This landmark agreement was formalized by H.E. Deemah AlYahya, Secretary-General of the DCO, and H.E. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the LAS, on September 23.
The MoU outlines a collaborative framework between the DCO and LAS to accelerate digital transformation and economic growth within the Arab region. Key areas of cooperation include digital market development, alignment of policies and legislation concerning the digital economy, and initiatives in innovation, research, and development.
Both organizations have committed to enhancing digital infrastructure, governance, skills, and awareness to bridge the digital divide. They will also focus on promoting ethical AI practices and supporting innovation through joint research and studies aimed at expanding the digital economy.
H.E. Deemah AlYahya emphasized the importance of cooperation and mutual understanding to ensure that all nations, businesses, and individuals have equitable opportunities in a globalized digital economy. “As the oldest regional intergovernmental organization, the LAS is instrumental in unifying our vision for a digital future,” she stated, underscoring the significant role of this MoU in promoting sustainable development across DCO Member States.
H.E. Ahmed Aboul Gheit highlighted the critical need for the Arab region to adapt to rapid technological advancements that are pivotal to the global economy’s future. “Through our partnership with the DCO, we aim to develop robust digital policies and support innovation to effectively utilize AI and other technologies,” he remarked, noting that the collaboration is key to combating poverty, enhancing security, and fostering sustainable development in LAS Member States.
This agreement builds on the foundations laid during a prior meeting in Cairo in May 2024, where the DCO and LAS pledged to deepen their cooperative efforts. This MoU marks a significant advancement in leveraging technology to achieve economic and social prosperity in the Arab region.
