Spotify has introduced a ‘Lite’ version of its app, designed for emerging markets, now available in South Africa, Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia. Spotify Lite is a smaller, faster, and simplified version of the main app, using less storage, data, and battery, making it ideal for users with older devices and limited connectivity.
“Music is meant to be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of your network connectivity, data plan, and whether or not you have the latest phone,” Spotify said in a statement. The Lite version, built based on user feedback, ensures millions more can access the world’s best music experience in areas with limited bandwidth and phone storage.
The Spotify Lite app takes up only 10MB of storage, compared to the original app’s 90MB. It also features data limit settings, allowing users to receive notifications when limits are reached—an essential feature for markets where data costs remain high.
This version is available for free and premium users on Android phones running version 4.3 or higher. While it is not yet available for iPhone users, Spotify Lite is accessible in 36 markets across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the Lite app is currently available in South Africa, while in North Africa, it can be accessed in Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia.
Spotify Lite follows in the footsteps of other successful ‘Lite’ apps like Facebook, Uber, and YouTube, which cater to emerging markets with low-bandwidth, low-footprint versions of their platforms.
As Spotify continues its global expansion, the Lite app brings the streaming service to more users in regions with data and storage limitations, helping them enjoy music seamlessly.
