Algeria has achieved a major milestone in its digital transformation, with over 1.5 million households now connected to high-speed internet via Fiber to the Home (FTTH). This accomplishment follows the government’s directives to expand fiber-optic technology nationwide, driven by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s commitment to improving digital infrastructure.
Since 2020, Algeria has seen a dramatic increase in FTTH connections, growing from just 53,000 connected households to over 1 million by November 2023, and now surpassing 1.5 million by October 2024. The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications emphasized that this expansion is part of a broader effort to accelerate digitalization and ensure better internet access for citizens.
In addition to expanding the number of connected households, Algérie Télécom has significantly improved bandwidth offerings, providing high-speed internet plans with speeds of up to 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps) on demand. These advancements are bringing cutting-edge technology to more homes, enabling faster and more affordable internet services.
The fiber-optic expansion program is also reaching previously unconnected areas, particularly in new urban developments. As copper-based networks are upgraded to FTTH, subscribers are transitioning from older DSL connections to more advanced systems. The total number of households with fixed internet access has increased from 3.5 million in 2020 to 5.8 million as of October 2024.
Algérie Télécom is actively promoting this next-generation technology through outreach campaigns, educating citizens—especially in emerging urban zones—about the benefits of fiber-optic internet.
This progress is a key component of Algeria’s broader strategy to foster a more connected and innovative society. As the fiber-optic network continues to expand, it is expected to contribute significantly to the country’s economic and social development.
