TikTok, in collaboration with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology Nepal (MoCIT), hosted the Digital Safety Summit Nepal on December 3, 2024. The event brought together government officials, educators, digital rights experts, child safety advocates, and industry leaders to discuss online safety and promote digital literacy in Nepal.
The summit featured engaging discussions, including a key panel titled “Navigating Risks, Protecting Users: A Collaborative Approach to Digital Safety,” with notable panelists such as TikTok creator Subas Ghimire, MoCIT Spokesperson Gajendra Thakur, and Digital Safety Expert Santosh Sigdel. The event also highlighted TikTok’s safety tools like Family Pairing, demonstrating the platform’s commitment to protecting Nepali users.
Ferdous Mottakin, Head of Public Policy and Government Relations for TikTok in South Asia, emphasized TikTok’s dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of its users, especially children and youth. He said, “This summit marks an important step towards creating a safer online environment in Nepal. We are committed to promoting digital literacy and online safety, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration with the Nepal government to achieve this goal.”
Gajendra Thakur, MoCIT Spokesperson, expressed the government’s strong commitment to establishing a safe online ecosystem for Nepal’s youth. He stated, “This summit is a significant step in our mission to secure a safe and inclusive digital environment. The government is determined to implement innovative measures to protect children online and promote digital responsibility.”
Prithvi Subba Gurung, Minister of MoCIT, also reiterated the government’s focus on improving digital safety. The summit concluded with discussions on expanding TikTok’s public policy program in Nepal, reinforcing the commitment to building a stronger, safer digital ecosystem for the country.
