Pakistan PTA Introduces VPN Registration for IT Freelancers to Support Digital Operations

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has launched an initiative to allow freelancers in the IT sector to register their Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) using mobile numbers. This move aims to support individuals without static IP addresses, ensuring that VPN services can continue securely and without interruptions.

Freelancers can complete the VPN registration process online by submitting their Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC), company information, and taxpayer status. This initiative aligns with the government’s decision to avoid a blanket VPN ban, as the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016 does not authorize such a measure. Instead, the PTA has opted for a regulatory approach that balances the need for cybersecurity with the demands of the IT sector. Over 31,000 VPNs have already been registered under this framework.

This step comes at a critical time as Pakistan’s IT sector grapples with internet disruptions that have been reported to cause losses exceeding $1 million per hour. Industry leaders emphasize the need for stable internet access, supportive policies, and robust infrastructure to meet the government’s ambitious $15 billion export target. The PTA’s initiative marks a positive step in creating an environment that facilitates the growth and stability of Pakistan’s digital economy.
