Qatar and UNDP Sign MoU to Advance Digital Innovation for Sustainable Development

During the 2024 Doha Forum, themed “The Innovation Imperative,” the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the State of Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance digital innovation as a driver of sustainable development.

This partnership recognizes the pivotal role that digital technologies play in fostering inclusive growth, enhancing access to essential services, and empowering communities across the globe. The agreement underscores a joint commitment to prioritize support for the countries most in need, promoting digital inclusion and paving the way for sustainable development through greater access to digital technologies.

H.E. Mr. Mohammed bin Ali Al Mannai, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, expressed Qatar’s recognition of digital technology’s transformative power. “This collaboration with UNDP highlights Qatar’s commitment to harnessing digital innovation to benefit communities worldwide,” he said. “It reflects our shared determination to bridge the digital divide, foster global partnerships, and ensure that digital transformation drives equitable growth and progress.”

Building on the successes of previous partnership agreements between UNDP and the Qatar Fund for Development (2019-2023), the collaboration aims to advance impactful digital and innovation initiatives. With the adoption of the Global Digital Compact and the upcoming 20-year review of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), this partnership will place digital transformation at the heart of the United Nations’ efforts to address global challenges. The initiative also aligns with Qatar’s strategic vision as outlined in its Digital Agenda and Qatar National Vision 2030, positioning the country as a leading hub for digital technology, innovation, and sustainability. Qatar’s hosting of major international events like the World Summit AI 2024 and Web Summit 2025 reflects the country’s commitment to fostering a thriving digital ecosystem.

UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner highlighted the urgency of addressing the digital divide, noting that it is one of the most pressing challenges of our time. “Bridging this divide is not just about providing access to technology, but about empowering individuals and communities with the skills and resources needed to thrive in a digital world,” he said. Steiner also emphasized the potential of digital technologies, especially artificial intelligence, as accelerators for development. He stressed that partnerships like the one with Qatar are essential for scaling solutions that maximize impact and create a future where technology serves as a catalyst for equitable growth.

This partnership will leverage shared expertise to drive digital transformation through building digital capacity, developing innovative solutions, engaging in thought leadership, promoting responsible technology use, and prioritizing digital access and literacy. The goal is to ensure the transformative potential of digital technologies benefits everyone, leaving no one behind.
