“The growth in internet and smartphone penetration is a game-changer for e-commerce in Egypt,” said Ahmed Mewafi, a strategic management consultant. “With more people gaining access to the Internet, particularly in underserved rural areas, the potential customer base for e-commerce has expanded significantly.”

The increased use of smartphones has also fueled the growth of mobile commerce (m-commerce), with businesses optimizing their platforms for mobile devices to enhance user experience and drive sales.

Consumer behavior in Egypt is shifting towards online shopping, with consumers appreciating the convenience, variety, and competitive prices offered by e-commerce platforms. Increased trust in online platforms and enhanced consumer protection measures are further encouraging online shopping.

“E-commerce growth in Egypt hinges on consumer trust, built upon secure transactions, reliable product quality, excellent customer service, and positive social proof,” said Saber Shaker, Professor of International Economics at Helwan University.

The Egyptian government is actively supporting the growth of the e-commerce sector through initiatives like the National E-commerce Strategy and the “Regulated E-commerce” initiative. These initiatives aim to create a more structured and predictable market, enhance consumer protection, and foster trust in online transactions.

Despite the positive growth trajectory, the e-commerce sector in Egypt still faces challenges, including competition from international players, data privacy concerns, and logistical limitations. However, the future of e-commerce in Egypt appears bright, with a growing middle class and increasing consumer confidence in online shopping.

“Egypt’s growing middle class presents a substantial opportunity for the e-commerce sector,” said Mewafi. “As disposable income increases, more consumers will be able to participate in the digital economy.”

By addressing the remaining challenges and capitalizing on the opportunities, Egypt’s e-commerce sector is poised for continued growth and is expected to play a significant role in the country’s economic development.
