Saudi Arabia has officially introduced a mandatory USB Type-C charging standard for mobile phones and electronic devices. Effective from January 1, 2024, the first phase of this initiative, overseen by the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) and the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organisation (SASO), requires manufacturers to adopt USB Type-C charging ports across a wide range of devices. These include mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, e-readers, portable video game consoles, headphones, speakers, and more. The goal is to enhance user experience, reduce consumer costs, improve charging and data transfer quality, and promote environmental sustainability by cutting down on electronic waste. Laptops will be included in the second phase of implementation, starting on April 1, 2026.
This initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals and aims to streamline the tech industry by establishing a universal charging standard. It is part of a larger effort announced in August 2023 to create a uniform charging port for devices, ultimately benefiting consumers and the environment.
