Algeria to Launch Revolutionary Mobile Payment System in 2025

Algeria is set to introduce the “DZ MOB PAY” mobile payment system in January 2025, marking a significant milestone in the country’s digital transformation. Announced by Mohand Bourai, President of the Association of Banks and Financial Institutions (ABEF), the system will allow citizens to make secure payments and transfer money using smartphones.

The new platform, aligned with Algeria’s goals of financial inclusion and digitalization, will simplify transactions for both individuals and merchants. The system enables payments via QR code scanning and will be led by three key institutions: the National Bank of Algeria (BNA), Al Salam Bank Algeria, and Algeria Post.

The service is designed to be user-friendly and free of charge for both users and merchants, promoting widespread adoption. This launch builds on Algeria’s expanding digital payment ecosystem, with significant growth in mobile payments since 2022. Following the introduction of the Switch Mobile platform in June 2024, interoperability between banks is now possible, enhancing the mobile payment experience.

By October 2024, Algeria had seen a significant rise in electronic payments, with over 14.8 million online transactions and more than 75 million smartphone-based transactions, positioning “DZ MOB PAY” as a key development in the country’s ongoing push for modernization.
