Morocco’s ANRT to Evaluate Internet Service Quality Starting February 7

Starting February 7, Morocco’s National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT) will begin assessing the quality and compliance of internet services provided by the country’s three major operators—Maroc Telecom, Inwi, and Orange. This move was announced over the weekend as part of the agency’s efforts to ensure that these services meet international standards, which are crucial for license allocation.

In a statement shared with H24Info, the ANRT confirmed that it will launch a “campaign to assess the technical quality of fixed internet services (ADSL, FTTH).” The purpose of this initiative is to evaluate whether the services offered by these operators align with the quality of service (QoS) standards set forth in their licensing agreements.

The 2023 report from the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) underscored the importance of such assessments, highlighting that measuring service quality helps protect consumers and ensures that providers meet the service levels outlined in their license commitments.

As part of the campaign, the ANRT is inviting volunteers to install quality measurement equipment in their homes. This non-intrusive equipment will monitor service quality indicators over a predetermined period, with no disruption to the volunteers’ internet connection. The campaign is expected to last 2 to 3 months, starting on February 7. Interested participants can apply by filling out a form on the ANRT website, after which technicians will visit their homes to install the measurement device.

While the focus of the evaluation is not explicitly stated, sources suggest that the campaign will assess factors such as latency, speed, web browsing, and video streaming performance. After the data is processed, which is expected to take one month, any deficiencies identified will be reported to the relevant operators. The ANRT has stated that it reserves the right to take appropriate action if necessary.

The results of this evaluation will also be accessible to participants, who will receive regular updates on the quality of their own subscriptions. This initiative falls within the regulatory responsibilities of the ANRT to ensure high standards in Morocco’s telecommunications services.
