eSewa Celebrates 16th Anniversary with Plans to Expand Services and Enhance Financial Inclusion

Nepal’s leading digital wallet, eSewa, celebrates its 16th anniversary on January 22, 2025, marking a milestone in its journey of transforming Nepal’s digital economy. From its humble beginnings with just four employees and a beta version in 2010, eSewa has become one of the key drivers of digital inclusion in Nepal.

Over the years, eSewa has revolutionized how Nepali citizens make payments, offering over 2,000 services, including utility payments, top-ups, insurance, and loans. The platform has significantly contributed to reducing paper use, saving over 372,000 kg of paper, and cutting down on carbon dioxide emissions by over 7.8 million kg.

With over 9 million users and 268,000 agents, eSewa has grown its services to cover a wide range of digital payment options, including easy loans for merchants and AI-powered customer support via the chatbot eVA. Looking ahead, eSewa plans to introduce saving and investment plans, including mutual funds, as part of its broader vision to evolve beyond a digital wallet and become a comprehensive financial service provider.

The company aims to continue its efforts to promote financial inclusion across all communities in Nepal, with plans to implement AI for fraud detection and enhance security for its users. As eSewa celebrates 16 years, it remains committed to fostering economic prosperity and supporting Nepal’s digital transformation.
