Amid increasing competition and financial pressure in the air transport industry, technology solutions are emerging as key drivers of efficiency and cost reduction. Recent deals in the Middle East with Wipro and SITA reflect the growing trend of technology-driven advancements in the sector.
Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has selected Wipro Limited, a leading technology services and consulting company, to spearhead a comprehensive modernization of its technology systems. Wipro will manage the seamless migration of legacy systems while enhancing operational efficiency across critical areas, including workplace, network, infrastructure, and service management.
Under the five-year contract, Wipro FullStride Cloud will provide Etihad Airways with a customized cloud-based solution, offering real-time insights into resource utilization and improving the scalability and agility of its global operations. Additionally, Wipro will integrate Gen AI modules into the airline’s IT framework, introducing automation in data centers, conversational support, intelligent device management, and proactive disruption management.
Etihad Airways will also have access to Wipro’s Innovation Lab in the UAE, a key resource for enhancing technology to meet the demands of its expanding operations.
In another development, Bahrain Airport Services (BAS), the leading ground handling service provider, has announced an upgrade to Bahrain International Airport’s ground operations management system. Through the implementation of the advanced Resource Management System (RMS) by SITA, the air transport industry’s leading IT provider, BAS aims to optimize workforce allocation, enhance equipment utilization, and provide real-time operational insights.
SITA’s RMS introduces cutting-edge technologies that allow airport operations teams to accurately manage resources, reduce downtime, and improve service efficiency, especially during peak times. The system also offers more effective monitoring of ground equipment, increasing lifespan while reducing maintenance and energy costs. Additionally, it facilitates flexible employee scheduling to ensure optimal coverage while preventing overstaffing during quieter periods.
These technological advancements are setting the stage for greater operational efficiency, ultimately improving the passenger experience and supporting long-term growth for both Etihad Airways and Bahrain International Airport.
