The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has officially renamed its Digital Security Cell to the Digital and Cyber Safety Directorate. This change reflects the unit’s broader role in enhancing internet safety and strengthening cybersecurity efforts, while maintaining its core responsibilities.
The Directorate’s scope has expanded in response to the increasing challenges posed by digital security. Formed in 2021, the Digital Security Cell initially worked in close coordination with intelligence agencies, law enforcement bodies—including the armed forces and police—and 19 other government ministries and agencies. Its primary responsibility was to monitor and remove objectionable content from social media and online platforms.
On average, the unit submitted about 130 content removal requests to social media platforms each day. However, with the rapid growth of users on social media, digital platforms, and OTT services, there has been a sharp rise in cyber-related crimes and abuse, intensifying the need for timely moderation.
As a result, BTRC has been receiving an increasing volume of content moderation requests from law enforcement and government bodies, necessitating quick actions with appropriate approvals. To meet these rising demands, the Directorate has also expanded its workforce.
