Etihad Etisalat Company (Mobily), a Saudi-listed telecom operator, has announced the successful landing of the Africa-1 submarine cable in Duba city, Saudi Arabia, significantly enhancing global and regional broadband connectivity. The advanced cable, capable of delivering 96 terabits per second over a span of 10,000 km, will improve broadband traffic across key regions, including Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Europe.
Salman Al-Badran, CEO of Mobily, highlighted that the cable’s landing will contribute to increasing broadband capacities in Saudi Arabia, aligning with the goals of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030. The high-speed data capabilities of the cable will be crucial for powering 5G networks, AI systems, and other data-heavy applications.
The Africa-1 submarine cable will also enhance data transmission for Internet of Things (IoT) devices and cloud services, accelerating the digital transformation process. The cable, funded by the Africa-1 consortium, which includes eight partners such as Algerie Telecom, e&, G42, Mobily, PTCL, Telecom Egypt, TeleYemen, and ZOI, is expected to be fully operational by early 2026.
