Hutch Sri Lanka has launched a new initiative in partnership with Ceylon Waste Management to install e-waste collection stations at its flagship store and brand shops. The project is designed to promote the responsible disposal and recycling of electronic waste, starting with mobile phones and batteries. Customers can drop off outdated or discarded devices to minimize environmental impact and contribute to a circular economy.
To incentivize participation, Hutch offers rewards for recycling: customers who recycle smartphones will receive 50GB of data valid for one year, while those who dispose of 2G phones will earn 500 minutes of talk time, also valid for one year. Ceylon Waste Management will handle the collection and ensure the safe processing of the e-waste.
Saumitra Gupta, CEO of Hutch, emphasized the importance of addressing the growing issue of electronic waste, linking sustainability efforts with the company’s services. Sudesh Nandasiri, Managing Director of Ceylon Waste Management, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, ensuring that all discarded devices will be processed safely and in line with data protection regulations. This initiative represents a significant step toward a more sustainable future, where businesses and individuals work together to protect the planet.
