The Pakistani government has announced plans to launch 5G services by mid-2025, according to Parliamentary Secretary for IT, Sabreen Ghori. Addressing the National Assembly, Ghori assured lawmakers that the internet speed issue will be resolved by then, improving connectivity for citizens.
Ghori elaborated on the slow internet speeds being experienced, attributing the issue to several factors. Lawmakers, including PPP’s Agha Rafiullah and MPA Shagufta Jumani, voiced concerns about frequent internet disruptions, with some questioning the reliability of the country’s internet infrastructure.
This promise of 5G internet services comes after the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) noted in its 2024 annual report that the country will face difficulties transitioning to 5G, citing financial challenges and the decreasing investment in Pakistan’s telecom industry. Investment in the sector dropped from $1.6 billion in 2021–2022 to $765 million in 2023–2024 due to the global 5G transition. The PTA report also highlighted concerns about telecom operators facing financial strain due to the heavy upfront investments required for 5G infrastructure, with a gradual return on investment expected.
Despite the challenges, the government aims to overcome these obstacles and fulfill its commitment to 5G services, which are expected to significantly enhance internet connectivity in Pakistan.
