The issue of slow internet speeds in Pakistan was raised in the National Assembly, with lawmakers expressing concern about the nation’s digital connectivity. The session, chaired by Deputy Speaker Ghulam Mustafa, underscored the public’s frustration with sluggish internet services.
In response, Sabheen Ghoury, the Parliamentary Secretary for Information Technology, assured the chamber that internet speeds would improve by mid-year. She also mentioned that the government is targeting the same time frame for the nationwide rollout of 5G services. Ghoury acknowledged the existing digital infrastructure issues contributing to slow speeds and emphasized that efforts are underway to address these problems and enhance connectivity.
Several lawmakers voiced their frustration with internet quality, including Agha Rafiullah, a member of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), who complained about the difficulty of downloading even a video. Shagufta Jumani humorously referred to a remark by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, suggesting that some unknown “fish” might be sabotaging the internet lines.
Despite the frustration, lawmakers emphasized that improving internet services remains a top priority for the government, with concrete plans to resolve the connectivity issues in the coming months.
