Bharti Airtel has successfully landed the SEA-ME-WE 6 (Southeast Asia-Middle East-West Europe-6) submarine cable in Chennai, after previously landing it in Mumbai in December 2024. The cable, engineered by SubCom, connects India to Singapore and France (Marseille), crossing Egypt through terrestrial cables.
Airtel’s landing of SEA-ME-WE 6 enhances its network presence with diversified capacity in the global submarine cable system. The cable will be integrated with Airtel’s data centre arm, Nxtra by Airtel, in Chennai and Mumbai, enabling businesses and global hyperscalers in India to access international connectivity and data centre services seamlessly.
Airtel has invested in the core cable and co-built a private network between Singapore, Chennai, and Mumbai, consisting of four fiber pairs. This system will provide 220 TBPs of global capacity to India, further strengthening Airtel’s global connectivity. With over 400,000 Rkms of network spanning 50 countries, Airtel aims to address the growing demand for global connectivity and data in India, bolstering its commitment to Digital India.
Sharat Sinha, Director & CEO of Airtel Business, emphasized that this investment will enhance Airtel’s secure, scalable global network, supporting India’s increasing need for digital infrastructure and connectivity.
