Khalti and IME Pay to Merge in Nepal’s First Digital Wallet Consolidation

Nepalese fintech companies Khalti and IME Pay have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to merge, marking the first-ever digital wallet consolidation in Nepal. The merger follows an in-principle agreement, with the newly formed company potentially being named either ‘IME Khalti’ or ‘Khalti Pay,’ though a final decision is yet to be made.

The leadership structure, including the board of directors and CEO, has already been established, but financial details and share distribution are still under discussion. This merger is made possible by the regulatory framework introduced by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), which amended the Transaction and Settlement Bylaw in 2077 (according to the Nepalese calendar) to permit digital wallet mergers under specific conditions.

Khalti and IME Pay are set to be the first to capitalize on this regulatory change, paving the way for a new phase of innovation in Nepal’s digital payments landscape.
