The Nepal Police Crime Investigation Department (CID) is set to implement Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based business intelligence tools to enhance crime control efforts. The use of AI aims to improve crime prediction, trend analysis, and investigation processes, helping law enforcement operate more efficiently and effectively.
While the initiative is still in the early stages, the introduction of AI is expected to revolutionize the way crimes are predicted and investigated. The technology will allow for more accurate pattern analysis, increasing predictability and enabling quicker and more efficient responses to crime.
Additional Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Kuber Kadayat, head of the CID, shared that AI would not only aid in crime control but could also be used to evaluate police personnel for promotions, creating a more data-driven and transparent career advancement process.
The CID has already procured an AI-based business intelligence tool from an India-based company and has begun the implementation phase. At least 15 CID personnel have been trained in Pune, India, to use the technology effectively. This makes Nepal Police the first government institution in the country to employ such technology, with support from the Finance Ministry for the procurement of the necessary hardware and software.
The CID has also partnered with local universities for research on crime control, focusing on areas such as financial crime investigation, human trafficking, and contemporary investigative tools. Additionally, plans are in place to expand digital forensic labs across the provinces and set up a DNA testing laboratory in Pokhara to alleviate pressure on the current lab in Kathmandu. These advancements reflect Nepal’s commitment to modernizing its policing efforts through technology.
