Artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity may soon be incorporated into Bahrain’s public school curriculum after a parliamentary committee backed a proposal, scheduled for debate on Tuesday. The proposal has garnered support from the Services Committee, which believes that both subjects are crucial in equipping students for the demands of an increasingly digital world.
MP Mohammed Mousa submitted the proposal, urging the Ministry of Education to formally introduce AI and cybersecurity into the curriculum.
Skills Development
According to a report sent to Parliament, the integration of these subjects would provide students with a stronger foundation in modern technology, helping them develop skills essential for success in today’s fast-evolving workplace.
In response, the Ministry of Education pointed to its ongoing efforts to expand digital learning. The ministry emphasized that AI and cybersecurity are already part of some lessons, particularly within IT and applied sciences courses.
Students are introduced to programming through tools like Scratch and Python, with additional classes focusing on online safety, data protection, and digital ethics. The ministry’s education strategy for 2023–2026 outlines plans to broaden the scope of AI education.
While existing courses touch on AI and cybersecurity, there is a growing push for more structured lessons on data science and cybersecurity to better align with industry needs.
Technology Advancements
In addition to these curriculum developments, training programs are being designed to help students stay up-to-date with emerging technology.
Despite these initiatives, the committee believes a dedicated school syllabus is essential to ensure that AI and cybersecurity receive adequate attention in educational settings.
The matter will be discussed further in Parliament on Tuesday.
