Tunisia Launches 5G Services with Three Major Operators Rolling Out Nationwide Coverage

Tunisia achieved a major milestone in its technological development as Orange Tunisie, Ooredoo Tunisie, and Tunisie Télécom simultaneously launched 5G services across the country. This rollout follows the swift implementation of licenses granted by the Tunisian Ministry of Communication Technologies, as part of a strategic initiative to accelerate the country’s digital transformation.

The licenses, awarded in July 2024 after a competitive tender process, grant each operator significant spectrum allocations, including 5MHz in the 700MHz band and 100MHz in the 3.5GHz band, valid for 15 years. Future phases are expected to include additional frequency bands for expanded coverage.

Orange Tunisie has set up 400 operational 5G sites in various regions and introduced a fixed wireless access router with Wi-Fi 6 capability, along with a “Turbo option” catering to gamers and streaming enthusiasts. The company also launched a 5G Lab at the Orange Digital Center in Tunis, focusing on enterprise applications in sectors like Industry 4.0, health, and education.

Ooredoo Tunisia introduced its “Fix Jdid 5G” service, offering fixed wireless access with speeds up to 100 Mbit/s for both residential and business customers. CEO Mansoor Rashid Al-Khater emphasized that 5G would be pivotal in driving Tunisia’s digital economy and fostering innovation.

Tunisie Télécom, leveraging its existing fiber infrastructure, supported the deployment of its 5G network and is set to activate a new submarine cable system within a year, improving service quality.

As of late 2024, Ooredoo Tunisie leads the market with 6.4 million subscribers, followed by Orange Tunisie with 4.6 million and Tunisie Télécom with 4.3 million. With the introduction of 5G, Tunisia’s telecommunications sector enters a new era, complementing its existing 2G, 3G, and 4G networks.
