Egypt has solidified its position as a regional leader in digital technology, with significant increases in internet users and a top cybersecurity rating. The country saw a rise of 6.3 million internet users from 2022 to 2024, bringing the total to over 82 million. Egypt’s cybersecurity efforts have gained global recognition, with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) ranking it among the top 12 nations in the 2023–2024 Global Cybersecurity Index.
Despite this progress, the country faces growing cyber risks, ranking second in Africa for cyberattacks, accounting for 13% of incidents on the continent. In 2024, over a hundred listings offering stolen Egyptian databases for sale or free distribution were identified on dark web forums. These breaches affected individuals, e-commerce, and sectors like services and transportation. The sale of personal data for 85 million Egyptians highlighted the urgency of addressing cybersecurity and data protection.
To tackle these concerns, Positive Technologies, a global cybersecurity firm, is hosting an open event in Cairo to bring together cybersecurity professionals, students, and researchers for collaboration and knowledge-sharing. Dmitry Serebryannikov, Chief Hacking Officer at Positive Technologies, emphasized the importance of the event for building a global cybersecurity community and enhancing collective security.
Ilya Leonov, Regional Director for MENA at Positive Technologies, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to expanding its presence in Egypt and the Middle East, supporting talent development, and sharing expertise. The Cairo event marks a significant step for Egypt in strengthening its role in global cybersecurity efforts.
