iXAfrica Unveils First Phase of NBOX1 Hyperscale Data Centre in Nairobi

iXAfrica Data Centres launched the first phase of its NBOX1 hyperscale data centre in Nairobi on Wednesday, marking a significant step in East Africa’s digital transformation. The facility, which was first introduced in July 2024, features 780 racks and 4.5MW of IT capacity. NBOX1 is part of a larger 22.5MW campus along Mombasa Road and is optimized for AI-driven workloads.

Additionally, iXAfrica signed a deal with the Kenya Internet Exchange Point (KIXP) to establish a peering Point of Presence (PoP) at the NBOX1 facility. This partnership will reduce latency and lower internet costs by localizing exchange traffic and minimizing reliance on costly international routes.

According to TechAfrica News, KIXP’s new PoP at NBOX1 provides seamless connectivity with major global and regional carriers, as well as secure fiber entry points and multiple internet exchanges, including LINX Nairobi and KIXP.

Snehar Shah, CEO of iXAfrica, emphasized that NBOX1 addresses the growing demand for cloud and AI infrastructure while providing secure and scalable solutions for businesses in East Africa. He stated, “We are proud to unveil the first phase of our hyperscale data centre, which is ready to host key government workloads and contribute significantly to the digitalization and cloud adoption in the country.”

In addition to NBOX1, iXAfrica is developing two more facilities in Nairobi: NBOX1.2, with an IT capacity of 18MW, and the 11-acre NBOX2 Tilisi campus, which will offer 53MW of capacity.

KenInvest CEO John Mwendwa praised iXAfrica for strengthening Kenya’s data sovereignty and driving cloud adoption, stating, “Kenya is on the brink of a digital revolution, and investments like iXAfrica’s hyperscale data centre are pivotal in positioning the country as a premier technology and innovation hub.”
