Mohamed Benchaaboun Appointed Chair of Maroc Telecom’s Management Board

The supervisory board of Maroc Telecom has appointed former finance minister Mohamed Benchaaboun as the new chair of the management board, succeeding Abdeslam Ahizoune, who led the company for 27 years. Under Ahizoune’s leadership, Maroc Telecom expanded its presence across Africa, with subsidiaries in several countries including Benin, Burkina Faso, and Mali.

Benchaaboun’s appointment follows a challenging period for the company, which was recently fined $630 million by its competitor, Inwi (Wana Corporate), for unfair competition practices. The fine, which exceeds Maroc Telecom’s 2023 profit of 6.1 billion dirhams, underscores the company’s legal and financial challenges.

Maroc Telecom, listed on both the Casablanca Stock Exchange and Euronext Paris, is majority-owned by the UAE’s Etisalat (53%), while the Moroccan government holds a 22% stake.
