Space42 and Viasat have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore ecosystem partnership options for developing a 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) initiative. This collaboration aims to enhance global satellite connectivity, targeting areas such as direct-to-device (D2D) satellite communications, narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT), and mobile satellite services (MSS).
In the first phase of this partnership, both companies will conduct technical and commercial studies to design a multi-tenant, multi-orbit 5G NTN infrastructure based on an open, standards-based architecture. This infrastructure is expected to support a range of L-band, S-band, and terrestrial spectrum, facilitating global roaming among regional network operators.
The partnership focuses on exploring sustainable technologies and system designs to improve satellite network efficiency for 5G readiness, ensuring compliance with global telecommunications regulations. The companies aim to follow industry best practices, including the guidelines of the Mobile Satellite Services Association (MSSA), to ensure seamless integration with existing networks.
Ali Al Hashemi, CEO of Yahsat Space Services (Space42), highlighted the transformative potential of the collaboration, emphasizing scalability, cost efficiency, and seamless network integration. Viasat CEO and Chairman Mark Dankberg expressed that the partnership with Space42 aligns with their strategy to foster innovation in space based on 5G NTN standards.
The collaboration marks a significant step toward building a more inclusive, future-ready satellite infrastructure that can support a wide range of industries and communities worldwide.
