Algerian Ministers Discuss Role of Video Games in Promoting National Culture and Supporting Startups

Algerian Minister of Culture and Arts, Zouhir Ballalou, chaired a meeting at the ministry’s headquarters to discuss the importance of developing video games to promote Algerian culture and preserve the country’s tangible and intangible heritage. The meeting, which was also attended by Minister of the Knowledge Economy, Startups, and Micro-Enterprises, Noureddine Ouadah, focused on supporting startups in this field.

The gathering included officials from both ministries, representatives from various startups, the National Office for Copyright and Related Rights (ONDA), the director of the National Center for Cinematography, and the commissioner of the International Comic Strip Festival of Algiers (Fibda). The meeting addressed the role of video games as an effective medium for transmitting and promoting Algerian culture.

Ballalou emphasized that the video game industry offers significant potential to introduce new generations to Algeria’s cultural and artistic heritage. Participants discussed the need to use video games to highlight Algeria’s rich cultural identity by designing games that combine entertainment with education, while also generating substantial revenue for the cultural industries.

During the meeting, Ballalou reviewed a presentation showcasing a variety of projects from startups specializing in video game design. The companies presented innovative ideas, including the creation of video games that incorporate elements of Algeria’s national heritage, a move that could help strengthen the country’s position in the global video game market.
